‘The Vagina Monologues’ campaigns to end violence
February 23, 2004
A sold-out crowd attended the sixth annual performance of “The Vagina Monologues” presented by the NIU Women’s Law Caucus last weekend.
The performance was to celebrate V-Day, a campaign to stop violence against women and girls, said Heather Wier, a sophomore law student and president of the Women’s Law Caucus.
“The Vagina Monologues,” written by Eve Ensler, is appropriate for college students because college women contribute to the large population of women who experience abuse, said Jane Brewer, producer and director of the performance.
“Our first goal is to raise awareness about violence prevention,” Wier said. “This is also to break the silence so victims are no longer afraid to talk. And we want to raise money for three worthwhile organizations that can definitely use the profit.”
All the proceeds from “The Vagina Monologues” will go to the Court Appointed Special Advocates, Helping Urge Great Successes and Elgin Community Crisis Center, Wier said.
NIU’s College of Law was the first law school to put on “The Vagina Monologues.”
Although this weekend’s program consisted mostly of women, some men wanted to be involved.
Richard Gleason, a sophomore law student, was an usher for the program.
“Women’s violence is an ongoing struggle,” Gleason said.
