Women’s hoops wins in 4 OTs

It took four overtime periods, but the NIU women’s basketball team found a way to snap a five-game losing streak with a 102-97 win over Bowling Green on Wednesday.
“What a game,” NIU coach Carole Hammerle said. “I’ve been coaching for over 30 years, and I can’t remember ever playing a four-overtime game. It’s unfortunate that somebody had to lose this game.”
The four overtime periods tied an NCAA Division I record. It was the 10th time a game had gone so long.
The game was sent into the first overtime when Bowling Green’s Liz Honegger hit a pair of free throws to tie the game at 59 apiece.
Stephanie Raymond ended the first overtime with a three-pointer with five seconds remaining to send it to the second overtime for the Huskies (10-14 overall, 5-8 MAC).
“Both teams could have won this game at multiple times, and both teams had chances to lose this game,” Bowling Green coach Curt Miller said. “Ironically, I thought each team was looser and played with no fear when trailing. Both teams, when leading in the final seconds of regulation and the overtimes, were trying to just hang on and win games instead of getting that one big defensive stop.”
Much like in the first overtime, the Falcons’ Carin Horne hit a three-pointer with two seconds remaining to force a third overtime. Monique Davis’ basket with one second left in the third overtime sent the Huskies into the fourth overtime where they won by five.
Joi Scott led NIU with a team-high 26 points and a game-high 16 rebounds in the win. The double-double was the fourth of the season for the Huskies sophomore.
Monique Davis added 19 points, while Raymond and Lindsay Secrest finished with 17 points apiece for the Huskies.
The Falcons (15-8, 8-4) were led by freshman Carin Horne, who scored a game-high 28 points, including 18 in the overtime periods. Horne was one of three Falcons to finish with a double-double.
“It was an emotional rollercoaster,” Miller said.
