DeKalb may add grocery store
February 12, 2004
The DeKalb Plan Commission voted to approve a possible grocery store to be located at the southwest corner of Annie Glidden and Dresser roads.
Southtown Ventures LLC and DuWayne Andresen are conducting a joint venture on the property.
Along with new commercial development, the developers also are asking for a Class A license so the grocery store can sell liquor.
Principal Planner Russ Farnum said if the store doesn’t get the license, it probably won’t be built.
Currently, all 16 of the city’s Class A licenses are in use.
The DeKalb City Council will be responsible for looking at the issue.
Andresen, who has owned the property for about five to seven years, said he thought it would be an ideal location for stores.
“We plan on making it very upscale,” he said.
Andresen, who owns DeKalb Realty and has worked on various development projects in DeKalb, already has some contacts with stores, but nothing is final yet, he said.
The potential grocery store will be 60,000 square feet, and on each side is a 15,000 square foot wing.
Farnum said the developers were waiting until the market was ripe until the grocery store proposal came.
Andresen said he would like the employees of the two Eagle stores, which recently closed down, to be able to work for the potential new grocery store.
With the Eagle stores shut down, the only grocery stores left are Wal-Mart, Jewel and Aldi. All three are located on Sycamore Road.
Andresen also said he was interested in having more development along Annie Glidden Road instead of on Sycamore Road.
Farnum said he has heard complaints from citizens living in the proposed area about there not being a grocery store.
“[The grocery store] will be helpful for day-to-day needs,” Farnum said.
The grocery store will have two full-access entries, one on Dresser Road and one at Annie Glidden and Twombly roads.
