CMU edges gymnastics team

Central Michigan extended its winning streak over the NIU gymnastics team to 14 straight meets in a quadrangular hosted by the Huskies on Sunday at the Convocation Center.

CMU edged the Huskies 194.42-194.150, while Alaska-Anchorage (5-6) finished third and Winona State (2-5) last. The meet against CMU counted toward the MAC standings, while the other two were non-conference.

NIU (4-5 overall, 2-3 MAC) went into the final event, the floor, trailing by .5, but after three consecutive top scores, CMU (12-3, 3-0) pulled away.

“Oh, I thought we had them,” NIU assistant coach Andy Morreale said. “We came out strong, and it came down to the last event.”

CMU’s Sara Burtinsky won the overall individual with a career-high 39.325. For NIU, Kristina Campos finished second and Tiffany Nolen third.

The meet marked the last time seniors Nolen and Dannielle Dacey will compete at the arena.

“I am more than happy with my performance,” said Nolen, who began as a redshirt freshman. “[My career] started off rough, but it is really ending on top.”

Holding flowers in the audience were Nolen’s parents, Cindy and Jim. They came from Georgia to support their daughter.

“Tiffany did a great job,” Cindy said. “The most important thing is the team showed the most enthusiasm I’ve seen in the five years we have watched them.”

After the loss, Tiffany already was looking forward to facing CMU again in the MAC Championships in March.

“Most teams don’t get a second chance,” Tiffany said. “Lucky for us we have that second chance and we will be ready for it.”
