NAACP presents annual MLK march today
January 22, 2004
The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People will host its 13th annual Martin Luther King March today.
NAACP president Tim Jones said the march is a celebration of Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy and impact on past and future generations.
This year’s theme is “I Am a King.” Jones said he developed the idea for the theme by reading “Everyone Can Be a King,” a book written by King’s son, Dexter King.
“I chose this theme because I wanted people to realize that everyone can follow the example that Dr. King set,” Jones said.
After the march, there will be a program at the Holmes Student Center’s Carl Sandburg Auditorium featuring Emil Jones Jr., president of the Illinois State Senate. Student Association President Shaun Crisler and Greg Armstrong, who Jones called an “up-and-coming student leader,” also will speak at the event. The three speakers will reflect on the impact King had on obtaining their leadership roles, Jones said.
“I strongly encourage students to come to show their appreciation for Dr. King,” he said. This event is not just for black students, Jones said. The event is for all students to share King’s legacy, he added.
