Twista: Kamikaze
January 29, 2004
-If it were physically possible for Webster (Emmanuelle Lewis) and that guy from the old Micro Machines commercials to conceive a baby, the end result would be Chicago native Twista.
The rapper is a drive-through speaker’s worst nightmare. In 1992, the Guinness Book of World Records named him the fastest rapper on the planet, but he was dethroned in 1998.
For the first time in nearly five years, Twista is back on the scene with his newest release “Kamikaze.”
The album’s first single, “Slow Jamz,” debuted 10 weeks ago and currently is at the top of the Billboard Hot Rap chart.
If only “Kamikaze” followed in the first single’s footsteps. Tracks like “Badunkadunk” and “Hope” bleed of mediocrity. That’s not to say Twista’s spontaneous spittin’ talent isn’t a feat in itself because it truly is a marvel. But, once you get past the fast-paced speech, it’s a run-of-the-mill rap album.
Production on the album is above average. The tracks are well-mixed, and the beats flow smoothly and fit the songs well. The guest appearances by Jamie Foxx, Ludacris, R. Kelly, Kanye West and Cee-Lo definitely improve the album’s quality.
But the album lacks where the single “Slow Jamz” doesn’t. The lack of catchiness dismembers the tracks and turns the listener off.
Maybe Twista needs to stick to his bread and butter, making guest appearances and doing remixes for songs.
When it comes to “Kamikaze,” you’re better off studying World War II Japan.
