New housing possible

By Dan Patterson

The Sycamore City Council delayed its vote on the proposed 366-acre housing development along Plank Road on Monday night.

The council will review plans for a subdivision, Sycamore Creek Phase Two, and may vote on the proposed annexation as soon as Feb. 2.

The development would include 568 single family homes, 75 to 80 townhouses and an estimated population of more than 2,100.

“It could mean a lot to the city,” Sycamore Mayor John Swedberg said.

Additional housing also would encourage businesses to enter the city and provide a customer base for commercial development.

The development would include 23 acres donated for a possible new school in the future and 19 acres of park land.

One audience member, Grace Adee, asked that the council not vote until after March 16. Sycamore voters then will vote on a referendum to halt Sycamore’s residential growth for seven years.

Annexation of 63 acres included in the proposed Willows Subdivision site was approved, as well as a request by Kishwaukee Health Systems to create a nine-lot commercial subdivision.

City Budget

City Manager Bill Nicklas gave council members a rough draft of the fiscal year 2004-2005 budget for their consideration.

Nicklas projects a 25 percent increase in health insurance costs partly because of the proposed hiring of two firefighters.
