A DeKalb woman is in police custody following the stabbing of her friend early Sunday morning.

Mary J. Cook, 41, of 730 N. 14th St., was charged with aggravated battery after a stabbing in the 100 block of Greenwood Acres, just outside DeKalb’s city limits.

Officers came into contact with Cook early Sunday while she stood at the corner of Sycamore Road and Greenwood Acres, where she was attempting to flag down cars for assistance, DeKalb County Sheriff Roger Scott said.

Scott said Cook notified officers that someone had been stabbed at her friend’s house.

When police arrived at the residence, they found the victim, a 46-year-old male who lives in the neighborhood, had been stabbed with a steak knife. The stabbing followed a verbal altercation between Cook and the victim while they were drinking, Scott said.

The victim, who suffered minor injuries, was taken to Kishwaukee Hospital, where he later was released.

Cook currently is being held in lieu of a $25,000 bond at the DeKalb County Jail, with an initial court date scheduled for today.

If convicted, she could face up to two to five years in prison and a $25,000 fine.
