Women mix art and emotion

By Dan Patterson

The closing reception for the DeKalb Area Women’s Center’s display of “favorite things” is Friday evening at the center, 1021 State St.

“These Are a Few of Our Favorite Things” is a collection of items of sentimental value to the center’s members.

Member Patty Rieman included photographs of her grandchildren, a Lake Michigan sunset and her clay-covered husband, Joe.

“He was working with clay and all dirty, but he had the biggest smile on his face,” Rieman said. “I call it ‘Joe looking happy.’”

Bonnie Amesquita contributed a wood carving of her mother in a flamenco pose that her father made early in their marriage.

Part of the allure of the display is the interrelationship of “the fabric of women’s lives. It’s like putting a quilt together,” Amesquita said. “It’s a blend of unique perspectives.”

Rieman described the events and character of the center as a blend of culture and feminism providing a sense of community support.

The closing reception is free and will include a vocal performance from 16-year-old Ashley Lamb.

The center holds month-long art shows throughout the year. The gallery is open from 7 to 9 p.m. Fridays when there are functions at the center or by appointment at 758-1351.

Parking for the event is available one-half block south of 1021 State St., off the 11th Street alley.
