NIU Choral Holiday Concert to ‘shout joy’
December 5, 2003
There won’t be red carpet or paparazzi in sight, but NIU will host a world premiere this weekend.
The never-before-heard “Shout Joy” will be one of many holiday melodies performed by NIU choirs, ensembles and orchestras at the annual NIU Choral Holiday Concert at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Music Building’s Boutell Memorial Concert Hall.
Eric Johnson, director of choral activities, said attendees can expect an interesting mix of music with a jubilant feel.
“It’s celebratory and uplifting and contemplative,” he said. “There are some pieces that are a little calmer, but it’s basically a celebration. It’s great music and a great way to end the semester and kick off the break.”
Johnson said there won’t be a bad seat in the house, thanks to a setup that will have groups perform in every region of the hall.
“It’s kind of a continuous event where the groups perform in multiple areas in the concert hall,” he said. “So, a group will perform on stage and then immediately another group will perform in the balcony and then someone from in the back of the hall will perform so that there is music coming from all different places.”
“Shout Joy” is a new work created by composer Robert Hawthorne for the NIU Concert Choir.
Johnson said he has high expectations for the event.
“I’m expecting nothing but brilliance,” he said. “They are well-prepared and very excited and do fine in these types of performances.”
Tickets are $5 for students and $7 for adults. Children under 10 will be admitted for free. Tickets can be reserved in advance by calling 753-1546.
