Florist to hold food drive
November 14, 2003
Glidden Florist and Greenhouse is making it easier to give to the needy this holiday season by holding a food drive this weekend during its annual open house at 917 W. Lincoln Highway.
“There are so many needy families and needy people at this time. We are the light, we are the ones that need to give,” said Debbie Heiman, manager at Glidden Florist.
The local florist will accept non-perishable food donations and monetary donations.
The open house includes an annual showing of unique holiday floral displays and refreshments. People bringing donations will receive a free gift and be entered to win a number of gift baskets and arrangements, Heiman said.
“A lot of times when it’s not right there for you, it’s hard to remember to be charitable,” Heiman said.
Glidden Florist hopes that with their large customer base, the food drive will be successful because of its convenience. Donations will be given to the Hope Haven homeless shelter.
Hope Haven served 24,124 meals last year.
At this time of year, many business are helping out, said Lesly Wicks, director of the shelter. Wicks said the shelter appreciates all help it receives, and also would like to remind people to give throughout the year.
“We depend on the support of of the community … We couldn’t continue to operate without their support,” Wicks said.
The shelter is at its capacity of 72, and more than 10 people typically have to be turned away each day. A meal, shower and laundry services are provided to those who cannot spend the night. The shelter also provides an open pantry for the community’s needy.
Wicks said NIU students are a huge source of support. However, in summer months, help and food become scarce.
Andrea Kibling, an administrative assistant at the shelter, said the monetary gifts Hope Haven receives during the holidays help it operate throughout the year.
Robert W. Bankston is one of the people the shelter is helping. The 22-year-old faces homelessness and a mother who is dying of leukemia. Robert credits the shelter for keeping him out of prison and giving him the opportunity to get his own residence by next month.
“There are times when people tend to gripe and complain; people should be grateful for having food and a place over their head,” Bankston said. “We are grateful for the help, and eventually, we will be able to give back to the community for giving to us.”
