A 37-year-old DeKalb man is at OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center, 566 E. State St., Rockford, recovering from stab wounds.

Kelly Kangas, 35, of DeKalb is being held at the DeKalb County Jail on charges of attempted first-degree murder, armed violence and aggravated battery.

Police arrested Kangas in front of 309 Pond St. after receiving a 911 call reporting a stabbing.

Kangas had been married to the man at one point, DeKalb police Lt. Jim Kayes said, but their current marital status is unknown.

A steak knife and large carving knife were recovered at the scene and are thought to have come from Kangas’ residence, Kayes said.

The man’s most serious wound is in his back, with another in the chest and some defensive injuries, Kayes said.

The man was airlifted to Rockford from Kishwaukee Community Hospital on Tuesday night.

Attempted first-degree murder and armed violence are Class X felonies punishable by six to 30 years in prison and a $25,000 fine. Aggravated battery is a Class 3 felony punishable by a two- to five-year prison sentence and a $25,000 fine.
