Halloween Bash a hit

Popcorn and cotton candy were just a few of the treats offered at Delta Sigma Theta’s Halloween Bash.

Delta Sigma Theta hosted its first Halloween Bash on Friday at the Student Recreation Center. The event was held to offer a safer alternative to trick-or-treating.

The event featured a haunted house and several booths for children to play games.

Many students and organizations volunteered to help with the event. Nick Jacobs, a member of Kappa Alpha Psi, said his organization volunteered not only to aid Delta Sigma Theta, but to help children.

“Our organization volunteered to promote unity among the black Greeks and provide a safe event for the children in of the local community,” he said.

Shannon Rapp, a freshman marketing major, said she volunteered because she also wanted to help with the effort to provide a safe environment for the children in DeKalb. The event was planned well, and she was glad she came, she said.

“I enjoy seeing the little kids dressed up,” she said. “This was a lot of fun.”

Because it was Family Weekend, many students brought younger siblings and family members to the event.

Lesha Drayton, a sophomore biology major, brought her nephew to the Halloween Bash. She said he enjoyed getting free candy and he had fun.

“There was a very nice turnout,” Drayton said.

Devon Scott, a member of Delta Sigma Theta, said it took about two months to plan the event. She said about 20 organizations assisted with the production of the event. She said the event went better than they expected, and they hope to make it even better next year.

Megan Lumpkin, also a member of Delta Sigma Theta, said they worked very hard to plan this event and to make sure everything went as planned. Lumpkin said the profits from this event will go to AIDS research.

“The event was a great success,” Lumpkin said. “We want to thank everyone for who participated, we appreciate their hard work.”
