Buffalo game won’t be on TV
November 6, 2003
Fans will need to buy a plane ticket or plan a road trip to see the NIU football team play at Buffalo on Saturday.
“The game will not be televised because no one is producing the game,” said Scott Lowenberg, NIU’s director of marketing and promotions. “If Buffalo were producing the game, it would have been pretty easy to put the game on either Fox Sports Net or another station.”
Those who stay in DeKalb have the single option of listening to the game on WLBK 130 AM.
Putting games on television has become much more frequent this year as the Maryland, Bowling Green and Ball State games already have been featured on television, with the Toledo game slated to appear on Fox Sports Net at 2 p.m. Nov. 15.
Lowenberg said the Toledo game will be produced by the MAC as a part of their game of the week. It is then up to Lowenberg to contact Fox Sports Net and have the station pick up local coverage.
Typically, when other schools produce games, the producing school either receives a rights fee or has its commercials aired to the other stations showing the game, he said.
“Every situation is a little bit different,” Lowenberg said. “There are a lot of loopholes and contractual obligations that affect different games.”
