Interns fare well

NIU experts agree that any internship will help students find a better job after they graduate, even if it is out of their major.
Janice Knudsen, coordinator of Outreach and Internships for the English department, said it is best to have an internship in a student’s respective major, but any would help.
“Serving an internship is always an advantage,” Knudsen said.
There are many offices and programs at NIU that can help students seek an internship that is based on his or her major.
The Cooperative Education/ Internship program located at the Campus Life Building, makes available access to 1,600 offices with more than 2,500 internship positions available
“We want to give them the experience they need for after they graduate,” said Doug Davis, director of the Cooperative Education/ Internship Program.
Students may not be working hard enough to find an internship in their department, Knudsen said.
“There are a lot. We live in the information age, and people need to write that information,” said Knudsen, referring to internship related to the English department. “Some students may have to market themselves and work a little harder.”
Where some students may have trouble finding an internship with what they want to do, the department of accounting makes sure getting an internship is easy for its students.
John Simon, coordinator of the Internship Program in the Department of Accounting, helps match accounting firms with students.
“Students don’t have the problem of finding their own internships like they do in other departments,” Simon said.
