New retailers to replace former Red Lobster
October 6, 2003
When Red Lobster relocates from its 2470 Sycamore Road location to Geneva later this month, the unoccupied space it will leave won’t be vacant for long.
Joseph Freed and Associates, which bought the building in late August, plans on doubling the size of retail space on the current property, said Paul Rasmussen, community development director for DeKalb.
“I know their plan is to demolish the existing building and rebuild it bigger,” Rasmussen said.
Rasmussen said the company plans to model the building to match the look of Northland Plaza. The reconstructed property will be able to accommodate one or two restaurants.
Dennis Harder, vice president of development services for Joseph Freed and Associates, said his company plans to do some construction at the site, but wasn’t able to give any definite information.
Harder said Freed and Associates is in negotiations with several retailers to fill the open space, and said the candidates are not just restaurants.
Once an agreement has been reached, the retailers and prospective opening dates will be announced.
Red Lobster employees were told in late August the restaurant would close because of financial reasons. They were given the opportunity to transfer to the new location. At least half of the restaurant’s 64 employees will continue working at the Geneva location, which is about 20 miles away.
