Groups offer support
October 27, 2003
Safe Passage groups give people the chance to talk securely about their personal problems.
Safe Passage, which has been in the community for 22 years, is an organization that sets up support groups, shelters and a 24-hour phone line to help community members deal with their personal problems.
The Safe Passage groups include a domestic violence support group, sexual assault survivor group, anger group and substance use and abuse education group. Anyone eligible to receive help can go to that specific group.
All groups except for the anger group are open to the public. The anger group requires that participants sign up and attend all eight sessions.
“These groups give people a chance to share and support each other,” counseling coordinator Becky Parfitt said. “It’s a more focused opportunity for people to open up and experience support.”
The Safe Passage groups are anonymous groups as well.
“Confidentiality is really, really important to us,” Parfitt said. “We never give out any information on anyone.”
Aside from the help groups, Safe Passage has a lot more to offer.
“A lot of people do not want to meet in groups so we have a phone line available 24-7,” said Donna Moulton, domestic violence program supervisor. “There is somebody here all of the time.”
Moulton said legal advocacy and counselors also are available for individuals and families.
“All services here are free,” Moulton said.
Moulton said Safe Passage usually brings in 250 people a month with the Safe Passage groups alone.
