Play attempts to show God’s role in modern life

Elogeme Adolphi, a Christian sorority on campus, is sponsoring a play called “Story of a Dancer.”

Taija Cockrell, a member of Elogeme Adolphi, said the play is about a young woman named Destiny who struggles through many events while in college. She finds that God always brings her through conflict.

Cockrell said Destiny experiences challenges through family, friendships and romantic relationships. The character also incorporates hip-hop and jazz to complement her dancing.

“This play brings more variety to students and inspires people to achieve whatever their hopes and dreams are,” Cockrell said.

Kristal Sutton, president of Elogeme Adolphi, said the sorority hopes the play shows NIU students that no one is perfect.

“Although we make mistakes,” Sutton said, “we should turn our lives around for the positive and begin to walk in a new light.”

Sutton said she encourages students to come to the play because although the play is fictional, it has real issues. She said she hopes students will see there is an alternative.

“The play will include laughter, tears, music and dance,” Sutton said. “It will relate to everyone in some sort of way.”

Sutton said the tickets cost $3 in advance and $5 at the door. Elogeme Adolphi will sell tickets today at DuSable Hall.
