Domazlice Bagpipe Band to perform free concert today

By Joe Weyers

The Music Building will present the sounds of several bagpipes at 8 p.m. today.

The Domazlice Bagpipe Band will visit NIU for a free concert at the Music Building’s Boutell Memorial Concert Hall.

The band, which originates from the Czech Republic, has performed around the globe. They have performed in Czechoslovakia, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and the Netherlands. The band also has performed in Asia, Russia and Japan.

Associate music professor John Novak recently returned from a visit to the Czech Republic.

“The music comes from the western region of Bohemia, the west side of Czech Republic,” he said. “They’re close to Germany.”

The concert will consist of a variety of songs, including vocal, dance, love and drinking tunes.

There are seven members in the band performing the authentic Chodsko folk music. They have played dancing parties, baptisms, weddings, concerts and other large festivals. The Domazlice Bagpipe Band is currently on tour throughout North America, most recently performing in Wisconsin.

Novak said the band is different from stereotypical Scottish bagpipes in several ways.

“It is happy music in general,” Novak said, comparing the Domazlice with Scottish bagpipes. “Nobody will be wearing kilts.”

Band members will be wearing “Czech-folk costumes,” though.
