Sheldon has surgery at Kishwaukee

Injuries have claimed another Huskie.

One week after NIU lost two defensive starters against Iowa State, the offense took a hit.

Junior wide receiver Dan Sheldon will miss the remainder of the season with a dislocated left elbow, coach Joe Novak said Monday.

On the Huskies second possession, Sheldon streaked down the left sideline for a pass. Quarterback Josh Haldi lofted a pass to a leaping Sheldon that was tipped in the air by Bobcat defender T.J. Wright. As Sheldon went down, he attempted to brace his fall with his arms. It was at that point that his left elbow gave way.

Sheldon had surgery at Kishwaukee Community Hospital on Sunday to repair the dislocated elbow and a chipped bone.

NIU was also without the services of defensive starters Javan Lee and Travis Moore against Ohio.

Lee was out with a partially torn hamstring while Moore missed time with a sprained ankle.

“You don’t lose good players and not feel it a little,” Novak said. “We had some guys step in and play but you still miss them.”

Moore will be out at least two to three more weeks while Lee is questionable for this week, Novak said.

TV or not TV

The NIU Homecoming game against Western Michigan will not be televised on Fox Sports Net as originally advertised.

Instead, Fox Sports will televise the Nov. 1 game against Ball State.

The 97th Homecoming game on Oct. 18 was originally supposed to be televised but was changed because of a scheduling conflict, Novak said.

Moving on up

Despite escaping Ohio at home with an overtime win, the NIU football team moved up in both national polls.

The Huskies continue to break the highest school ranking each week, this time landing 18th in the ESPN/USA Today coaches poll and 16th in The Associated Press top-25.

NIU jumped two spots in the coaches poll and two spots in the AP.

Before this season, no NIU team had ever been ranked in the top 25.

This week marks the third straight week Novak’s team has been ranked.

Player of the Week

After setting a school record with 234 reception yards, wide receiver P.J. Fleck was rewarded by the MAC with the Offensive Player of the Week for the West Division.

The 234 yards are the ninth most in MAC history for the senior from Sugar Grove.

Fleck also set a career-high with 14 receptions in the game.
