ESPN’s Gameday crew to cover BG game

By Adam Zolmierski

Every Saturday the ESPN College Gameday crew broadcasts from a college campus that features a big game.

Usually it’s a Michigan and Ohio State game or a Notre Dame and USC game, but this week ESPN will be in Bowling Green, Ohio, for NIU’s game.

Gameday will broadcast at Bowling Green from 10:30 a.m. until noon and will stay there throughout the day to do updates on the ESPN network.

The game between No. 12 NIU and No. 23 Bowling Green will be shown on ESPN 2 at 3 p.m. It will be the first time a game between two ranked MAC schools will be broadcast in the regular season.

“It’s exciting to get recognized,” NIU coach Joe Novak said. “I’ve said that all along, but honestly when we get over to Bowling Green our whole focus will be on the football field. I don’t care if the president of the United States is there, we’re focusing on what we’re doing.”

NIU’s opponent this past Saturday, Western Michigan, played BGSU and the Huskies in the last two weeks. WMU coach Gary Darnell said the NIU vs. BGSU game will be a toss-up, but because NIU has seen more television exposure, it might have a slight edge in the conference game.

“You have to learn how to play on TV,” Darnell said. “There are time factors that go into the game; how to use timeouts, you know your game is going to be longer. There’s a learning curve to that and Northern has that right now. So, if you were going to give an edge for something, I don’t think Bowling Green has been on that much this year and there truly is a difference.”
