Local police get ready

Party time for NIU students means overtime for DeKalb police.

DeKalb police will be running double shifts tonight and Saturday night in order to monitor the large number of people who will be in town, said DeKalb police Lt. Jim Kayes.

Greek Row will be a main target. Punishments will be arrests, and not just a slap on the wrist, he said.

On the weekend of Aug. 23, which was just before school started, DeKalb police coordinated a liquor sting with the Illinois State Police that resulted in 132 violations, primarily in the Greek Row area.

“They’re mainly for open liquor on the streets,” Kayes said. “Most of the people who we catch are underage.”

Each citation came with a $200 fine.

State police also will be in town to help regulate during the weekend.

Kayes said opening the bars at 5 a.m. instead of 6 a.m. – approved Monday night – probably won’t cause any problems.

“People who are up that early aren’t looking to cause trouble,” Kayes said.

Homecoming weekend is one of the largest weekends for DeKalb, second only to Corn Fest, he said.
