Elgin police arrest man for carjacking

A DeKalb man is being held by Elgin police on charges that he stole a car at knifepoint Monday evening in DeKalb.
Police arrested Rogelio Figueroa, 21, of DeKalb. He is being held in Elgin and awaiting transport to DeKalb.
Elgin police stopped a vehicle matching the stolen vehicle’s description around midnight Monday.
DeKalb police said the suspect forced the occupants out of the vehicle with a knife about 7 p.m. Monday near 716 N. Annie Glidden Road, which is about halfway between Crane Drive and Varsity Boulevard..
“They caught him in Elgin around midnight, still in the car,” DeKalb police Lt. Jim Kayes said.
Figueroa is charged with felony theft, aggravated assault and aggravated vehicular hijacking. He also was wanted on a DeKalb County warrant.
The aggravated assault charge carries a possible fine of $2,500 and six months to a year in jail.
Felony theft is punishable by two to five years in prison and a fine of $25,000.
Aggravated vehicular hijacking is a Class X felony punishable by six to 30 years in prison and a $25,000 fine.
