SA looks to fill 4 vacancies

Help Wanted: Student group seeks students available on Sunday nights to discuss campus policy and allocate student fees. Additional available time is a must.

The Student Association is accepting applications to fill the four senator positions left vacant after fall elections.

Students interested in serving as a senator must be activity-fee-paying students in good standing.

“Anyone who is interested in getting involved, and is willing to commit the time necessary is someone I think should consider filling out the application,” said Andrew Nelms, speaker of the SA Senate.

The available senate positions originally were intended for commuter students; however, not enough commuter students ran for the senate in the fall election.

“I encourage as much participation from commuter students as possible,” said Nelms, who previously served in the senate as a commuter student.

“The trouble is, most commuter students are students who are non-traditional and so they don’t have the time to dedicate to serving within the Student Association.”

To fill one of the four vacancies, a student must fill out and submit an application to the SA office at the Campus Life Building, Suite 180.

Each applicant will have the opportunity to give a three-minute speech to the senate and answer any questions senators may have. The senate will then vote on appointing the student to fill the open position.

Applicants are heard by the senate in the order in which their applications are received by Nelms.

Nelms estimates that serving as a senator requires about five hours a week. About three hours are spent in two weekly meetings, a senate meeting on Sunday evenings and a committee meeting held during the week. The remaining hours are spent researching and proposing senate business.
