Ailing Huskies to take on Rockets and Falcons
October 9, 2003
Good news: The NIU women’s soccer team has six of its next seven games at home.
Bad news: Coach Frank Horvat will be without four injured players in this weekend’s two home games.
Seniors Tiffany Anderson and Jill Heikkila will be out for the season.
Anderson, a Libertyville native, had her second ACL knee surgery.
Horvat said she’s now had surgery on both of her knees.
Heikkila, a Chicago native, had surgery on her hand Monday, which didn’t go as well as Horvat hoped.
“She had a detached tendon and some ligaments and she lost all her movement in the fingers,” Horvat said. “We thought she’d be back and able to play within a week, but they feel it is just too big of a risk.”
The third senior, Maggie Nowicki, will still be on the injured list with a sprain, but Horvat hopes to get her back next week.
Sophomore Carrie Dvorak will miss the game with a hyper-extended elbow.
The Huskies’ depleted lineup will go against Toledo and Bowling Green State this weekend.
The Huskies look for their first win at 3:30 p.m. today against Toledo (5-7-0, 3-4-0 MAC) at Huskie Soccer Field. The Rockets are in a three-way tie for the eighth tournament spot. The Rockets are on a two-game losing streak after dropping games to Miami-Ohio and Ball State last weekend.
“It’s good to be home; We’ve been traveling a lot,” Horvat said.
Sunday’s match against Bowling Green at noon takes place against a Falcons team that has won four of its last five outings. The Falcons had a comeback victory against Miami-Ohio Sunday, scoring three goals in the final 25 minutes.
NIU (1-10-1, 0-6-1 MAC) has a 4-2-0 edge in the all time series against Bowling Green, winning 3-2 in last fall’s contest.
The Huskies failed to score in their three games last week, adding to their total of six shutouts of the year.
“We need to continue to play the way we have, especially last weekend in terms of effort,” Horvat said. “Our greatest thing we really need to do is score goals and we are struggling to finish.”
Horvat said the team has taken a negative with the injuries and turned it into a positive.
“Not having those seniors has been difficult,” he said, “but other players have been stepping up.”
