University Health Service offers flu shots
October 22, 2003
With cooler weather sneaking in the door, the flu season is starting to take full effect.
According to Karen Grush, a public health administrator for DeKalb County, flu season usually is from November to April, peaking January through March.
One way to reduce the risk of getting the flu is to get a flu shot.
“The best time to get the shot is in October since it takes a couple weeks for the vaccine to develop,” Grush said.
A representative from Kishwaukee Community Hospital said the flu shot does not guarantee immunity from the flu because it doesn’t protect against all strains of the flu. However, it does reduce the risk.
“Everyone who wants to reduce the chance of getting the flu should get the shot, and obviously people at high risk should get the shot,” Grush said.
NIU students will have an opportunity to receive the shot from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Holmes Student Center’s Regency Room.
The DeKalb County Health Department will offer flu shots throughout October and November.
DeKalb residents can receive the shot from 11 a.m. to noon Nov. 3 at Oak Crest, 2944 Greenwood Acres Drive.
The flu shot will cost $20, and a receipt will be given so the patient can send it to his or her insurance company.
The shot also will be available from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Nov. 10 at the DeKalb County Health Department. The DeKalb County Health Department also will accept walk-ins every Tuesday and Thursday starting Oct. 28. Walk-in times are from 8:30 a.m. to noon and from 1 to 4 p.m. For information, call the DeKalb County Health Department at 748-2467.
