Changes could be in the works for Greek Row, bars

Greek Row update

An ordinance up for first reading at Monday’s DeKalb City Council meeting could make Greek Row a special service area.

The council will consider special taxes against the area that would be established by the ordinance for which to provide for the services.

If passed, some improvements to be made on Greek Row would include better lighting.

“If this goes through, this should take care of the problem,” said Community Development Director Paul Rasmussen. He said the main issue for residents in the Greek Row area is security provided by additional lighting.

Liquor Commission

Class A, B and E liquor license holders will be able to open a hour earlier on Sundays and Class E’s will not be able to have cover charges, if recommendations made by the liquor commission are approved by the council.

Currently, bars cannot open until 11 a.m. and cannot start serving alcohol until noon.

In past liquor commission meetings, Class A liquor license holders have complained about Class E’s charging covers.

The city council will meet at 7 p.m. Monday at Council Chambers, 200 S. Fourth St.
