Women’s soccer gets 1st conference victory

The NIU women’s soccer team got its first MAC win this weekend, and almost added its second.

Almost.

With less than 13 minutes remaining in the second half, the Huskies had a two-goal lead over Bowling Green (6-7-1, 4-3-1 MAC).

BGSU scored twice in the final minutes to tie the game at three, forcing the game into a sudden-death overtime.

NIU (2-11-1, 1-7-1 MAC) pressured for most of the overtime period, but with 46 seconds left, the Falcons netted what Huskies coach Frank Horvat thought was a questionable goal.

“I felt our goalkeeper was obstructed by a player from another team,” Horvat said. “She couldn’t get to the ball. The referee said no, the linemen didn’t call it.”

The Falcons 4-3 win was the fifth in their last six games.

“It’s frustrating,” Horvat said. “We played good enough to win again today, and I know we’re fighting to make things happen. We gave ourselves a very good chance of winning and didn’t give up. I have to give Bowling Green a lot of credit. They were down 3-1 and scored three unanswered goals.”

Audra Gordon, Katie Klaas and Elaine Eliadis each scored for the Huskies in Sunday’s game. Denise Papke, Chanelle Crosby and Megan Kolkay added assists.

The Huskies had scored three goals in the seven MAC games they had played before Friday’s 2-1 win over Toledo (5-9-0, 3-6-0). They scored five this weekend.

“We really worked on the offensive side of our game this week, and it showed,” Horvat said. “We took a lot of shots, and created off great opportunities and we finished a fair share of them – enough to win a game.”

Horvat’s team gained its first win on Friday, but didn’t have much time to celebrate after Bowling Green’s come-from-behind win the following day.

“We could have four or five wins right now,” said Horvat, after Sunday’s loss. “Today is an obvious example of that.”
