Injured list gets smaller
October 21, 2003
There is a chance that both linebacker Javan Lee and defensive end Travis Moore will play Saturday against Bowling Green.
A sophomore, Lee will be available but may not be 100 percent, coach Joe Novak said.
A junior All-MAC performer, Moore is questionable for the game. Moore practiced Tuesday and may see time, Novak said.
Fellow defensive end Jason Frank will not play on Saturday because of a sprained right knee he suffered against Central Michigan.
NCAA rankings
NIU players Michael Turner and P.J. Fleck have made an impact on the college football season so far this year, at least statistically.
Turner ranks third in the nation with 929 rushing yards and second with 192 attempts.
Fleck ranks second in the country with 57 receptions.
When the Huskies go to Bowling Green this week, they will face the nation’s second best total offense.
Coach Greg Brandon’s team averages 514.6 yards per game.
Azar and the record books
After breaking the all-time kick scoring record for the MAC last week, Steve Azar stands two field goals from the most career field goals in MAC history.
His 66 field goals trail Miami’s Gary Gussman and Toledo’s Rusty Hanna.
Azar has collected three MAC Player of the Week nominations this season and has made 11 consecutive field goals and 49 straight extra points.
Another honor for Fleck
On Tuesday, Fleck was named the MAC Scholar-Athlete of the Week.
Not only is the Huskie senior the nation’s second leading receiver in receptions, he also has a 3.43 cumulative GPA as an elementary education major.
Fleck had 103 yards on 10 receptions in NIU’s win over Western Michigan on Saturday.
Junior quarterback Josh Haldi also received the honor on Sept. 30, the first week the award came out.
BCS busters
NIU was ranked No. 10 in the first BCS rankings released Monday.
The No. 10 spot is two places better than the Huskies are ranked in the AP poll and four places better than the ESPN/USA Today Coaches poll.
“It excited the guys a lot,” NIU defensive end Vinson Reynolds said. “I was with about 10 players when I saw it. It was shocking for the most part. I couldn’t believe it. It was a great feeling to see our name up there with the big schools.”
