Silver-screen horror comes to small stage

By Mike Runestad

It’s a “mix of scary and fun.”

That’s how theater arts major Alex Gunn, an actor in “Children of the Corn II,” explained the performance.

“Children of the Corn II” is a compilation of scenes from various movies including “Scream,” “Poltergeist” and “Freddy vs. Jason,” as well as parodies of other movies. There also are some original scenes.

There will be four performances of “Children of the Corn II” – twice as many as last year.

“Last year was on the fly,” said theater arts major Alice Pacyga, member of the production’s coordinating committee.

Performances of “Children of the Corn II” will take place today and Friday at 8:30 and 11:30 p.m. at the Steven’s Building Player’s Theatre. Each performance is expected to run about 90 minutes.

“I think the show is going to be cool because there are not a lot of Halloween things going on right now,” Gunn said.

Tickets are $5 and are available at the door on a first-come, first-served basis. Both performances sold out last year.

Proceeds will help fund the annual showcase in Chicago. At the showcase, theater students have the opportunity to perform in front of agents and casting directors.

“It helps students get agents,” Gunn said.

“Children of the Corn II” contains adult language that would not be appropriate for small children.

“It would probably be rated ‘R,’” Pacyga said.
