SA committee upholds veto

The Student Association finance committee upheld former SA President Kevin Miller’s line-item veto of $83,943 to last year’s Campus Activities Board’s budgets Thursday night.

CAB’s budget for fiscal year 2003-2004 was approved last May by the SA Senate at $508,924, before Miller’s veto. A special senate meeting was called for the purpose of reviewing the veto, but quorum was not met and voting that potentially could override the veto could not take place.

“No one knows why he cut it,” said Steve Illingsworth, vice president of finance for CAB.

The new budget, $424,981, was what remained for CAB to program with for this year.

One of CAB’s budgets, however, did receive funding in the form of $5,500 for Fine Arts that had been cut previously. On June 30, Gary Gresholdt, vice provost of Student Affairs, reinstated the funds, bringing the new total to $430,481.

SA Treasurer Andrew Josephson said he was on a deadline of Oct. 31 for making a decision concerning the budget and wanted to confirm the deadline with Gresholdt. He said he contacted Gresholdt on Thursday, but had not heard back from him by meeting time.

No one at the meeting said whether they knew the reasoning for Miller’s budget cuts, or where the cuts were made.

“I don’t want to make a decision when I don’t know what the cuts were,” said Donna Dalton, finance committee member and SA senator.

Finance committee members also debated whether CAB needs the vetoed funding to operate.

CAB is “operating tight and not very efficient,” Illingsworth said.

Andrew Nelms, finance committee member and SA Senate Speaker, said CAB could operate on the reduced budget.

“It’s still a respectable budget that anyone can function on,” Nelms said.
