NIU shut out twice

The NIU women’s soccer team suffered two shutouts over the weekend at the hands of Akron Friday and Kent State Sunday.

Both road scores turned out the same, with the Zips and the Golden Flashes keeping NIU’s offense silent with 3-0 losses.

Akron (4-6-1, 3-0 MAC) won its second game in a row. The Zips’ Mirka Mohs had a goal and an assist in the first half to give Akron the upper hand. Mohs scored her fifth goal of the season with 19:45 gone in the first, and set up Bethani Wanner for her first goal of the year less than 20 minutes later.

“[Akron] did some good things early in the second half, but we weathered it and had three good chances to get back into it,” NIU coach Frank Horvat said. “We just couldn’t finish. Then we made a mistake on a bad clearance in the back, and they put it away.”

Akron’s Nicole Meiler added another insurance goal with 2:46 remaining in the second half by intercepting a Huskie clearing attempt for a 12-yard goal.

Kent State (10-1-1, 7-0 MAC) remained perfect in conference play by handing the Huskies their eighth consecutive loss of the season.

The Golden Flashes’ Amanda Messer scored on a rebound shot to put her team up 1-0 with 30:41 gone in the first half. Kent State couldn’t add another cushion goal until late in the second half, when the Flashes scored two goals within the span of two minutes.

Jenn Frey set up Lauren Caminati, who scored her seventh goal of the season with a shot into the corner of the net at 74:28. Frey added her own goal at 76:15.

“When you can’t finish, that puts a lot of pressure on your defense,” Horvat said. “Our defenders feel like they can’t make any mistakes. We need to start taking half-chances; we need to score. I’m happy with our effort and our energy level. We’re a better team than our record shows, but we need to get a goal to get things rolling.”

The Huskies have not scored in the last three games, and have been shut out six times this season.
