Top two MAC teams visit NIU
October 23, 2003
Two top MAC teams come DeKalb this weekend for the NIU women’s soccer team’s final two conference games of the season.
With the Huskies out of tournament contention, coach Frank Horvat’s team hopes to finish the season with a four-game winning streak.
NIU faces Central Michigan at 3 p.m. today at Huskie Soccer Field. CMU (7-6-2, 5-4-1 MAC) needs a win to guarantee a spot in the eight-team MAC Tournament.
“Our job is to keep this win streak going, and definitely make it hard on Central,” Horvat said. “If we knock them off tomorrow, that’s even more pressure on them for Sunday.”
The final MAC games will determine the fate of CMU and six other teams that will battle for the remaining four spots in the MAC Tournament.
“I’m excited about the weekend,” Horvat said. “I’m glad to see that we’re still working hard and that we haven’t given up on the season.”
The Huskies face Eastern Michigan on Sunday. EMU is a win behind first-place Kent State. EMU’s 2-1 victory over Kent State gives them the advantage should the two teams be tied in conference standings.
With more than half the team injured, Horvat hopes to build on momentum from Sunday’s 1-0 win over Southern Utah.
“If we can get by the bruises we have and put it together, I think we’ll be fine,” Horvat said. “We’ve trained hard enough. Now it’s just a matter of playing with a lot of heart and determination.”
