A decade celebrating women
October 27, 2003
The DeKalb Area Women’s Center, 1021 State St., now is in its 10th year of existence and continues to empower DeKalb area women to fight sexism and other forms of oppression.
The center is a resource for women who are supportive of women’s culture and want to be a part of a community focused on “herstory,” said Anna Coveny, member of the DAWC board of directors. “Herstory” is history from women’s views and includes the accomplishments of women during their struggle to break into a man’s world.
Since its incorporation in 1993, DAWC has brought numerous resources to DeKalb area women. Currently, DAWC hosts a different art gallery every month, offers women’s advocates speakers and has its own library of feminist literature. Some of the workshops have included self-defense, health and wellness, finance and communication.
The purpose of DAWC is to “promote women in whatever they are doing,” Coveny said.
The events hosted by the center vary each year because of its members and their interests. Anyone who subscribes to the mission statement can join. Although there is a small membership fee, potential members can opt to volunteer eight hours of service in lieu of that fee.
The organization is volunteer-run and relies upon grants and membership dues to stay in existence. Different NIU classes volunteer at DAWC to collaborate in community service projects. Recently, the landscape design class planned the Meditation Garden now standing to one side of the building.
Each year, DAWC sponsors a coat drive and a career clothing drive. Their annual Make a Difference Day will be held this Saturday at the center to do community service in conjunction with NIU and Kishwaukee College.
The center also hosts “Fridays in 2003,” a series of speakers and workshops focused on women. For more information on events at DAWC, call Coveny at 758-1351.
