Convo Center dishes up a slice of ‘Fame’

By Joe Weyer

The musical “Fame” will be performed at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the Convocation Center, 1525 W. Lincoln Highway.

The NIU show will be one of more than 5,000 “Fame” performances, which have taken place in more than 16 countries.

The musical follows the lives of talented and dedicated students at New York City’s High School of the Performing Arts.

The story chronicles the teenagers’ lives from their opening auditions until their graduations, while they all have one common goal: fame.

After “Fame” was a hit movie in 1980, Janet Jackson starred in the spin-off television series, which NBC aired from 1982 to 1987. The show later ran in syndication on various networks.

This summer, NBC showed a reality TV series where contestants competed for “fame.”

Kevin Selover, marketing manager for the Convocation Center, said he expects a broad audience at the show.

“The resurgence of the TV series ‘Fame’ brings back the younger audience,” he said.

“Fame” is produced by Phoenix Productions, which also has produced shows such as “The Vagina Monologues” and “Godspell.”

For students, ticket prices range from $20.50 to $40.50. Reserved ticket prices for the general public range from $25.50 to $45.50.

Tickets can be purchased at the Convo Center box office, online at www.ticketmaster.com or by phone at 312-559-1212.

Students can only receive the discount if they purchase tickets at the Convo Center.

Arena officials expect a large walk-up crowd, and could not give an estimate of how many tickets they expect to sell.

The musical appears Sunday night only, with the doors opening at 6:30 p.m.
