Pro pool shooter breaks it up
September 3, 2003
While both Chicago baseball teams are in the hunt for their first World Champion title in years, NIU welcomes a man who has won 22 of them in a row.
Paul Gerni is a World Trick Shot Champion, and can sometimes be seen on “Trick Shot Magic” on ESPN.
Gerni, also known as “The Ambassador of Pool” and the “Grand Master of Trick Shots,” will hold a series of events periodically throughout the day today at the Huskie Den in the Holmes Student Center.
At 12:30 p.m., Gerni will hold a “Show Preview.” This will be a 20-minute display of trick shots.
Following an intermission, Gerni will continue with “Master Class, a Pool Workshop” at 2 p.m.
Donna Wargo, manager of the Huskie Den, said the workshop will be a general overview of pool. Gerni also will answer specific questions about pool.
“Anybody that wants some help on their pool game is welcome to come down,” Wargo said.
At 7:30 p.m., the real show will begin.
“Trick Shot Exhibition” will be an hour of Gerni doing what he is known for, performing trick shots.
DeKalb resident Terry Wolf plans to attend all of the events.
“It’s awesome,” Wolf said. “I’ve watched him on ESPN so many times. I had a chance to meet [professional pool player] Allison Fisher, and the chance to meet another professional pool player is a great opportunity.”
All events are free, and risers will be set up around the pool table where Gerni will play.
Free raffle tickets will be given away, and participants will have the chance to win pool accessories such as cue cubes, pool gloves, tip shapers, chalk and videos, Wargo said.
