Who’s your favorite Huskie?

By Sean Connor

Only Britney Spears kissing Madonna at the MTV Video Music Awards is a hotter topic on campus right now than NIU football.

A recent anonymous survey was filled out by 10 men and 10 women, randomly chosen in the Stevenson cafeteria.

Students were asked whether they followed the football team. Those who answered yes took their chances with the survey.

Who’s your favorite Huskie football player and why?

The women ate this one up and let their true feelings out about wide receiver P.J. Fleck.

Seven of the 10 women said Fleck was their favorite, but it was for more than just his playing abilities.

The 5-foot-10 senior received comments from the ladies such as, ”He’s really hot,” and ”He’s so gorgeous.”

Dan Sheldon, Randee Drew and Akil Grant received the other votes from the girls.

Michael Turner tied Fleck with three votes from the men, while Sheldon came in a close second with two votes.

Middle linebacker Nick Duffy and kicker Steve Azar received the final two votes, with Azar earning praise from a student who said, “He’s got NFL written all over him.”

Fleck’s popularity among NIU students earned him this next question.

On a scale from 1 to 10, how hot is wide receiver P.J. Fleck?

He’s hot to the women and too hot for the men.

Though three men responded with a no comment, the rest gave Fleck more credit for his looks than the girls.

Of the seven men who responded, Fleck came away with an average score of 12, including a rating of 30 from one male student.

For the most part, the women answered honestly, except for one woman who gave Fleck a 14. The three-time letter winner came away with an average score of nine from the opposite sex.

Even though Fleck stole the category for best looks, mention the name Turner and everyone is sure to know who you’re talking about.

Which Michael Turner nickname do you prefer: “Turner the Burner” or “Hot Sauce?”

Turner’s latest nickname, “Hot Sauce,” is not popular among students.

Even though the North Chicago native has his own bottle of hot sauce on the market to promote his Heisman campaign, “Turner the Burner” has caught the ear of the students.

Of the women voters, 90 percent were in favor of “Turner the Burner,” while eight of the 10 men concurred.

Of the 20 votes cast, “Hot Sauce” only received three votes.

Would you date one of the starting offensive linemen? Why or why not?

The women answered this question cautiously, with half saying, “Sure, depending on his personality.”

One brave woman and man each said yes, they would date a lineman, with the other women answering maybe.

Responses as to why or why not were a whole different story, with one woman saying she only would date him if he went to the NFL.

Guys’ comments ranged from, “They’re too big,” and “It’s not a star position” to “I only go for kickers.”

A large responsibility for how well the running game turns out to be against Alabama will fall on the shoulders of the linemen.

But what will happen if NIU pulls off another upset?

Should NIU be ranked in the Top 25 if it beats Alabama?

Ranked No. 28 in The Associated Press Poll and No. 31 in the ESPN/USA Today Coachs’ Poll, the Huskies’ chances of being a top 25 team in the nation aren’t far from becoming reality.

All 10 women surveyed believed, without a doubt, that NIU should be ranked No. 25 or higher if it takes down the Crimson Tide a week from Saturday.

Eight guys also said yes, and of the other two, one said NIU already should be ranked. The other said the Huskies should be ranked if they win, but they won’t.

To sum it up, we’ve learned that Fleck is hot, Turner is “The Burner,” O-linemen might be all right if they have good personalities and NIU should be in the top 25 if a win is posted in Tuscaloosa next Saturday.
