Intramurals begin

You don’t have the speed of Michael Turner and you can’t jump as high as Marcus Smallwood. But as the intramural season gets ready to begin, you can be the star.

The first intramural sport to start was softball, which began Monday. Other sports in the late-summer session include three-on-three basketball, flag football and co-ed volleyball.

Signups for co-ed volleyball begin today, flag football on Sept. 29 and both three-on-three basketball and indoor soccer on Oct. 14.

“A really popular intramural sport is flag football. We’re hoping for a turnout of about 50 teams,” said Amy Fawcett, intramural sports coordinator. “After that the 3-on-3 basketball is usually a big hit and draws really well.”

Some of the less-popular sports offered are tennis, badminton and racquetball. Tennis signups end on Wednesday, and badminton and racquetball signups begin Oct. 13.

Also helping run the intramural sports program are Tim Handler, the graduate assistant for intramural sports, and Clint Bull, the program manager. For information, call Handler or Bull at 753-9389.

To sign up for intramural sports, a participant must be an NIU student or faculty member.

The cost to join one of the leagues ranges from $30 to $35 for an entire team.
