‘70s porn tunes get the crowd feelin’ groovy
September 24, 2003
If you don’t shower and live in DeKalb, you were at The House, 263 E. Lincoln Highway, for the Spackle show Friday night.
Although the band members were older, they drew a diverse crowd of middle-agers reliving their youth, and dread-locked offspring of flower children.
Spackle’s set had a distinctive 70’s porno feel. Their music might have been better suited for a porno shop.
The music set the mood to make the audience feel as though it were immersed in an adult film.
Spackle’s lead singer sported welding goggles, and the other members rocked their respective tie-dye and fisherman hats. Multi-colored stage lights blinked blue, purple and yellow and enhanced the groovy vibe. Girls swayed to the music as if they were possessed by the ghost of Jerry Garcia, while others nodded their heads and tipped their beers to the performance.
The set mostly was instrumental, and only slight changes in melody could be detected. The vocals were mellow.
Rachael Byrd, a senior at Batavia High School, described Spackle as “a bigger-show vibe at a smaller location.” She thought they had a feel-good vibe.
Alina Wagner, another senior at Batavia, didn’t know who Spackle was until the show, but seemed to enjoy the band.
The most enthusiastic Spackle fan, and House employee, was Aaron Clark. He danced behind the counter as he served the patrons.
He praised Spackle as “free range grooves with your favorite side of berry hummus. In other words, a hell of a good time!”
The Spackle lyrics that encompassed the feeling were, “Sometimes I have to get so high and eat a strawberry rhubarb pie.”
