BIC hosts open mic tonight

Believing in Culture will host an open mic at 7:30 p.m. tonight at the Stevenson C-Tower’s New Orleans Room.

BIC President Alex Gothard said the event is for many different types of artistic expressions.

“Students can come listen to and perform poetry, music and/or spoken word,” he said.

Gothard said last year’s open mic had a great turnout and BIC is hoping for the same this year. Gothard said BIC decided to host this event because its purpose is to be the “cultural connection in the halls.”

Kiarri Andrews, BIC treasurer and host of the open mic, said BIC wanted to host the event because there’s a significant amount of gifted and diverse students on campus.

“There will be an incredible caliber of talent presented for free in a nice, poetry club-like setting,” Andrews said.

Andrews also said there will be a performer playing African music and surprises throughout the whole night. Andrews said students should come to be exposed to the many outlets students have to express themselves.

Not only will there be performances, but prizes will be given away at the event. Gothard said door prizes such as shirts and hats will be given away throughout the night.

BIC also will give away floor seats to the Ludacris concert on Oct. 18 at the Convocation Center, 1525 W. Lincoln Highway.

“All you have to do is sit there and enjoy to win something,” he said.

It’s not too late for students to sign up to perform at the event. Gothard said to ensure a spot on the list, performers should arrive no later than 7:15 p.m.
