Women’s soccer travels to Illinois St.

NIU women’s soccer makes a midweek trip to Bloomington-Normal at 4 p.m. today to face Illinois State in non-conference play.

NIU suffered three injuries in Sunday’s tie against Ohio, forcing starters out of the lineup. Maggie Nowicki, Tiffany Anderson and Leigh Steigerwald are unlikely to play, NIU coach Frank Horvat said. Anderson is out for the year with a torn ligament.

The Huskies (1-7-1, 0-4-1 MAC) come off Friday’s 3-0 loss to Marshall and a 1-1 tie to Ohio, both at home.

“Last year was a good game,” said sophomore Christie Ehrhardt, after Sunday’s draw against the Bobcats. “If we play like we did today, they’re not unbeatable.”

Last year’s contest gave the Redbirds a 4-3-0 all-time record advantage with a 2-0 win at Huskie Soccer Field. Illinois State has won the last four meetings between the two teams.

The Redbirds (3-3-2) have managed only five goals in eight games so far this season. Illinois State defeated Northern Iowa Sunday to end a five-match winless streak.

“They don’t seem to be as dominant as in the past,” Horvat said of the Redbirds, “but they’re still a good program.”

Ehrhardt scored in Sunday’s tie against Ohio, helping the Huskies break a four-game losing streak.

“That’s new territory for them,” said Horvat, of ISU’s recent losses. “We’re looking forward to going down there and trying to win.”
