Former student now dean

Promod Vohra, acting dean of the College of Engineering and Engineering Technology (CEET), has seen more than most at NIU.

He has been a student, professor, administrator, parent of a student, associate dean and, since July 1, the acting dean of CEET.

“I am even more excited about being here now than I was when I began a month ago,” Vohra said. “We have a tremendous facility that offers a continuous spectrum of learning.”

Some of those who work with Vohra say his energy is what makes him such an excellent dean and role model to students.

“He is in such a wonderful mood every day, no matter what’s going on,” administrative aide Mia Hannon said. “He is always energized, and when that positivity is at the top, it trickles its way down to everyone.”

Since Vohra began, he has launched a major outreach program with several companies to enhance the image and visibility of the college. The companies include Motorola, UPS, Caterpillar, International and Hamilton Sundstrand.

CEET Alumni and Ambassador Club is another program that Vohra began. It enables alumni to stay in contact with each other and stay involved in the college’s activities. It also provides a network so alumni can share experiences with present students.

“Our college provides an environment where students have easy access to professors,” Vohra said. “It is also an interactive environment and a comforting one. Students feel that their input counts and is valued.”

Vohra works to keep communication open between students and faculty.

“When no other teachers have the time to help, he finds the time,” said Drake Devore, a senior mechanical engineering major. “He is the best thing that could have happened to this college. It is nice to be able to have a friendship with someone that is in charge.”

Vohra succeeds Romualdas Kasuba, who had been acting dean of the college since 1986.

“He was an excellent mentor to me,” Vohra said. “He was big on team concepts, much like I am. Our college is walking together to get to the next level. From students to administrators, we will grow together.”
