Encouragement for education
August 20, 2003
Greetings,
On behalf of the staff here at the Center for Black Studies, we say welcome to the beginning of a new journey.
The Center for Black Studies offers both interdisciplinary academic programs and cultural activities.
The center offers courses relating to the life, experience and history of people of African descent; as well as a minor in African or African-American Studies. Each semester we offer five courses that may be of interest to you.
We also house several student organizations – African Student Association, Black Student Union, Black Graduate Student Association, Black Theater Workshop, B.R.O.T.H.E.R.S., National Pan-Hellenic Council-NIU, Nation of Islam Student Association, Present Perfect Modeling Organization, S.I.S.T.E.R.S. – to name a few.
During the course of the year, we will be sponsoring several lectures and other activities for you to enjoy, including the African Cultural Pageant, African American Leadership Conference and Kwanzaa.
We invite incoming freshmen and transfer students to participate in our S-Plan, Survive and Succeed, where you will be able to meet with upperclassmen and discuss some of the challenges and strategies to make your matriculation at NIU a success.
We invite you to stop by the center to meet the staff and students. We are located across from the parking garage and next to the parking office. If you would like information, stop by or call 753-1709.
