Where are all the doughnuts?
June 30, 2003
There is a lack of doughnuts on the NIU campus, and some students are wondering whether their morning appetite ever will be satisfied.
“It would be good to have a doughnut shop close to campus because students don’t have a lot of time before classes to eat at home,” said Mike Romano, a sophomore engineering major.
A doughnut shop on campus would be convenient because of students’ busy schedules.
“Doughnuts are quick and easy to carry on the way to class early in the morning,” Romano said.
Krispy Kreme doughnuts have been a fairly common sight at DuSable and Cole halls over the past year, with various student groups using them to raise funds.
“Every time there’s Krispy Kreme around, they probably sell out, or a least they get eaten by the people selling them,” said Kenny Struhs, a senior communication major. “So you know there’s a high demand for the doughnuts.”
However, it seems DeKalb planners are working to remedy the lack of doughnuts.
“We have been approached by some of the doughnut retailers,” said Chad Bryden, DeKalb’s economic development planner. “We’re trying to show them that there’s a need for more businesses and services directed toward students.”
Although some retailers are looking to come to the area, no specific companies have made offers yet, Bryden said.
Students still are hopeful that someone soon will fulfill the demand for doughnuts on campus.
“If doughnuts are good enough for Homer [Simpson], they’re good enough for DeKalb,” said Kyle Hendrickson, a junior studio art major.
