NIU to get new Graduate dean

By Nick Swedberg

The NIU Board of Trustees has recommended the approval of the appointment of Rathindra N. Bose as the vice president for Research and dean of the Graduate School. The appointment will take effect July 1, if confirmed at the June 19 BOT meeting.

Bose said he wants to enhance the existing graduate program by increasing the amount on money the university attracts for research.

“My goal is to get a $100 million within the next five years,” Bose said. He said he also thinks the technology research activities of NIU could raise revenue by licensing and marketing technology to a company.

Bose said he became aware of the position a year ago.

“I became interested by what [NIU] has to offer,” Bose said.

Bose, who is from Kent State University, said while Kent and NIU are “equally ranked” he was attracted to NIU by the engineering program.

Bose said he is looking forward to working at NIU and described NIU’s president and provost as dynamic leaders, whom he has had previous experience with.

After graduating from Georgetown University in 1982, Bose joined the Kent faculty in 1985. He currently holds the same position at Kent that he is expected to be appointed to at NIU.

Bose has taught a variety of chemistry classes at Kent and his research group focuses on cancer research, specifically cancer drug delivery and mechanism of action.

“We’re fortunate to be gaining an individual of Dr. Bose’s caliber, reputation and experience,” said NIU President John Peters.
