Summer classes moved
April 20, 2003
NIU will close DuSable Hall for the summer in an effort to save money.
The Office of Registration and Records already has changed class locations on TRACS.
More than 100 classes had to be relocated. For example, History 171, which was to be held in DuSable 406, has been moved to Wirtz Hall 318.
DuSable Hall contains 51 classrooms that usually are used for courses in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
The building’s closing could save the university thousands of dollars a day, said Bob Albanese, associate vice president of Finance and Facilities, in a Northern Star article published on April 8. It would save money in the areas of upkeep, air conditioning and electricity.
Frederick Kitterle, dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, thinks the university is responding to the budget crisis in an appropriate manner.
“I’d much rather we didn’t close DuSable, but we are in a situation where the state is $5 billion in the hole,” he said. “We’re just trying to make the best of a not-so-good situation.”
NIU President John Peters is doing everything he can to minimize staff and faculty firing, Kitterle said.
University officials are working with Registration and Records to make the relocation of classes smooth and orderly.
