NPHC steps it up at the Convocation Center

Members of the National Pan-Hellenic Council came together to perform a step show contest Saturday at the Convocation Center. They showcased history and dispelled rumors that NPHC Greeks don’t get along.

The step show contest was part of Legacy Weekend, a celebration to commemorate black NIU alumni.

According to Nikisha Watt, a member of the NPHC responsible for the execution of the step show, the event took two months to prepare. Stepping is tradition among the Greeks of the NPHC, she said.

“[Stepping] was a way Africans expressed themselves and it developed into a tradition for NPHC Greek letter organizations,” Watt said.

Sam Simmons, a junior communication major, and Elliot Ness hosted the step show.

The event began with a roll call, when Greeks are recognized and respond with their various calls.

In addition to stepping, two members of Alpha Phi Alpha wore snakes around their necks. Delta Sigma Theta began its act with members of the sorority coming out of space ships with space suits on.

Iota Phi Theta performed with members stepping and simultaneously performing dialogue. Sigma Lambda Gamma finished the step show with an act that combined African and Latin traditions. In addition to the Greek organizations, there were performances by Dynamic Destruction, Present Perfect Modeling Organization and an open mic freestyle contest.

The winning fraternity and sorority were Alpha Phi Alpha and Delta Sigma Theta, respectively.

“Our vision for Alpha Phi Alpha and other Greeks is to increase the awareness of Greek life and bring a social elevation to NIU’s campus,” said Steve Duroseau, vice president of administration for Alpha Phi Alpha.

The grand prize was $500, which will go to hold future events.

Jocelyn Watson, a member of Delta Sigma Theta, said it was an honor to win the competition since this was its first time stepping in eight years.

“Through hard work and perseverance, this once again proves that with commitment to our organization and to NIU, success will always shine through at the end,” she said.
