SA postpones budget approvals

By Nick Swedberg

With one Student Association Senate meeting left this year, the SA has one final opportunity to approve more than 70 budgets for next year.

The senate waived the first reading on several items of new business on its agenda, including one to appropriate funds to the SA and SA-recognized organizations. The SA now will have to approve all proposed budgets, including the SA’s own budget, in one meeting.

Among the remaining items on the agenda were a resolution to form an ad hoc, or temporary, committee to review the missions of all SA-recognized organizations and a resolution to form an ad hoc committee to review SA staff job descriptions.

At the meeting, the senate voted for Sen. Jeff Meyer to be next year’s senate speaker. Meyer and fellow senator Andrew Nelms were nominated in a previous meeting. After no additional nominations were made at the meeting, the senate gave Meyer and Nelms an opportunity to speak and answer questions.

Several senators verbally supported Meyer and Nelms, but Meyer received more endorsements from senators.

“I can’t say anything but good things about [Meyer],” said Sen. Frank Rodgers.

Sen. Douglas Reisinger said Meyer stood by his principles and did not let allegiances affect his decisions. The vote was 18 to 16 in favor of Meyer.

The senate also approved a bill to eliminate the senator emeritus position. Before the bill was passed, a former senator could come back to the senate and speak on a piece of legislation, but not vote.

The senate unanimously voted in favor of a petition to prevent NIU from selling and/or distributing student information. This is the second time this petition has come up for voting.

The SA finance committee will hold meetings on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, and will hold a final meeting on April 24.

The senate will not meet this Sunday, but will hold its final meeting on April 27.
