Police warn residents of new scam
April 6, 2003
Another scam has made its way into DeKalb in the past weeks, and law enforcement officials again are asking area residents to keep a lookout.
Two residents reported being approached by two men who offered services to do home repairs for an inexpensive price. The men in each instance were described as Eastern European or Hispanic, according to a press release from the DeKalb Police Department.
The police department would like to echo its warning to be wary of scams. These reports come not long after the department had alerted the community to the Canadian lottery scam that has resulted in area residents losing large sums of money.
In this scam, the perpetrators use a team effort to defraud the victim. One will distract the victim, while the other will burglarize the victim’s home. The scam often centers around the offer to do repairs or inspections in the home. In many cases, these scams target the elderly.
The DeKalb County Elderly Care Services Bureau is working with the police department to inform DeKalb citizens of the danger of these types of scams.
For information, call the services bureau at 758-6550, or the DeKalb Police Department at 748-8400.
