Real World posers
April 22, 2003
They enjoyed their time at NIU so much, they said they would stay the night and party at Molly’s Eatery and Drinkery.
Theo of “Real World: Chicago” and Trishelle of “Real World: Las Vegas” spoke in front of about 750 raucous students at the Carl Sandburg Auditorium on Tuesday night. The event was sponsored by the Campus Activities Board.
“Where are my people from Chicago at?” said Theo, 21, when he first entered the stage decked out in jeans and an NIU shirt.
Greeted by a loud applause from the female population present, Theo was liked by many – until he announced he has a girlfriend, which was greeted with disgruntled groans. But Trishelle, 22, was mocked at times by the crowd in what was an informal question-and-answer format.
“Theo was good. But Trishelle was kind of snobby,” senior sociology major Jorie Galan said. “She was calling people pathetic with some of their questions. It was enjoyable, though.”
Wearing snug jeans, a jean coat and high heels, Trishelle spoke of her season, which was the most recent “Real World” to air on MTV for 12 seasons.
Trishelle, who is single, said that she and Arissa from her series posed for upcoming June issue of Playboy. Currently, she is three credits shy of graduating from the University of Southern Mississippi where she is majoring in broadcast journalism. After graduating, she hopes to eventually host her own show.
Theo began at Tuskegee University in Alabama before the Real World, and said he has since dropped out. Now he is at Chaffey College in California. He said he wants to get a B.A. in business while he’s there, then go to Cal Poly and work on his Master’s.
Theo is taking acting classes and has started his own business, which is centered at www.respectthecrown.com.
CAB organizer Brook Beyers was happy with the event.
“We had Aneesa in the fall and the Real World guests were the least expensive of all our options,” Beyers said. “We thought it would be a great time of the year with finals coming up to bring them in just to get everyone’s minds off of school.”
While the show is centered around sex, relationships and other rebellious activities, both said they had a tough time when they returned home having to deal with their fathers, but have rectified the differences.
“We didn’t talk for a couple weeks,” Trishelle said. “I told him, ‘I’m sure I did a lot of things to disappoint you, but I’m still your daughter.’ He understood, so he doesn’t watch the shows anymore and now we get along.”
Theo’s father is a pastor at a local church and was worried at the beginning of the show of what his son was doing. After members of his church watched Theo on the show, they left his father’s church.
“My dad told me, ‘This whole church could walk up and leave me, but I’ll always be by your side.”
Clearing up rumors from her show, Trishelle played down rumors of a threesome that took place between her, Steven and Brynn.
“I wouldn’t even call it a threesome,” she said. “I kissed a girl and I kissed a guy. Brynn came into the room with me and Steven and was trying to feel up on us but I wasn’t having it.”
While Trishelle and Steven had numerous sexual encounters on the show, she was portrayed as what she called a slut. She denounced any notions of this after a question from the audience.
“When I even look at the shows, I say to my roommate, ‘Am I a slut or what?’ But me and my real friends know who I really am. I slept with one guy [Steven] over the seven months and kissed numerous others. Come on, that’s not bad.”
While Steven said on the show that he was just sleeping with Trishelle for the sex, she said what she was thinking after she saw the show.
“When a girl and someone tells you they love you, you believe them,” said Trishelle, to which someone responded in the crowd by yelling, “Dumbass!”
She also said that Frank was portrayed as the good Amish boy, but he got more “action” than what they showed.
Theo did another MTV series, Battle of the Sexes, which is now airing. He said that Trishelle and him are both going to be in another Battle of the Sexes that they will compete in this summer.
They ended the show by saying, “Where’s the party at tonight? We want to party.”
After several people screamed Molly’s, Theo confirmed with Trishelle that they were going out then said, ‘We’re there.”
